Comparison of postoperative satisfaction with low subscription power segmental intraocular lenses and high-order aspheric intraocular lenses

【Purpose】In patients with bilateral implantation of low subscription power segmental intraocular lenses (Lentis® Comfort, LC) or high-order aspheric intraocular lenses (TECNIS Eyhance®, TE), their postoperative satisfaction with respect to binocular distance vision (BV) and monovision (MV) were investigated.
【Subjects and Methods】We enrolled 65 patients who had undergone LC or TE insertion in both eyes at Aichi Medical University Hospital at least three months before the study and had uncorrected visual acuity of 0.7 or better in both eyes. The subjects were classified as the BV group with a subjective postoperative refraction difference of ≤ 0.5 D between the two eyes and the MV group with a refraction difference between 0.6 D and 1.5 D. In a 5-point scale questionnaire, the subjects assessed the performance of their naked eyes in daily life activities such as driving, walking, shopping, watching TV, cooking, eating, using a computer, reading, and using a smartphone.
Analysis was conducted as follows: (1) Satisfactions with LC and TE were compared in each of the BV and MV groups. (2) In each of the LC and TE groups, the satisfaction regarding BV and MV was compared. (3) Multiple regression analysis was conducted to determine the factors for patients’ satisfaction.
【Results】(1) Satisfactions with LC and TE did not significantly differ regarding BV. Regarding MV, satisfaction with LC was significantly better for walking (P=.015) and shopping (P=.020). (2) The subjects with LC had significantly better satisfaction with MV for walking (P=.024) and shopping (P=.043). In the subjects with TE, the satisfaction with BV and MV did not significantly differ. (3) Factors for patients’ satisfaction were pupil diameter and the refraction difference between the two eyes in the subjects with LC; and sex, eye axial length, and binocular uncorrected visual acuity at 5 meters in the subjects with TE.
【Conclusion】Our results suggested that LC could achieve better postoperative satisfaction with monovision.
