【Purpose】After a training for instructors at orthoptic clinical practice, we conducted a questionnaire survey regarding changes in their attitudes among those who had completed the training to assess the training results and areas of improvement.
【Methods】A total of 141 participants who had attended the training between 2017 and 2019 were included. The questionnaire included 17 items on the instruction in orthoptic clinical practice, and the responses used a 5-point scale with a focus on the changes in attitudes after the training.
【Results】The survey response rate was 22.0%. Of those who had given instruction after the training, 9 (42.9%) responded that the training was “very effective”, 12 (57.1%) responded “somewhat effective”, and 0 responded “not effective”. Principal component analysis was performed on the items related to the training outcomes with the first principal component “support for learning activities”, the second “information sharing with the staff members”, and the third “guidance for multi-professional collaboration”. With regards to “support for learning activities”, the item showing the most remarkable changes in attitudes was “creating a question-friendly and open communication environment for students” in 18 responses (85.7%). In contrast, the item showing the least changes in attitudes was “Preparation of a guidance plan for students” (6 responses, 30.0%).
【Conclusion】The survey results showed that the training has improved the trainees' attitudes toward providing a better learning environment for orthoptic students at clinical practice. Improvements in organizing a better guidance plan for clinical practice will be necessary in the future.
