Thermotropic Liquid Crystals of Amphoteric Surfactants

Abstract

Amphoteric surfactants of amino acid derivatives containing a 2-hydroxyalkyl group were prepared and their thermotropic liquid crystalline properties studied by DSC and IR analyses. The hydroxyl group in the 2-hydroxyalkyl chain plays an important role by enabling intermolecular hydrogen bonding, resulting in thermotropic liquid crystalline properties.
