5, 6-O-Alkylidene-or alkenylidene-L-ascorbic acids were prepared by the transacetalization of L-ascorbic acid with aliphatic aldehyde or ketone dimethyl acetal in good yield. The isolated products derived from aldehyde dimenthyl acetal were found to consist of a mixture of two diastereomers (ratio, 1 : 1) based on the results of NMR spectroscopic analysis.
