Abstract
1. There is no marked distinction between the resistance of enamel rods and interrod substance against the attack of dental caries.
2. Prior to caries attack, the enamel seems to demineralize before proteolysis of the organic substance.
3. After a diffused demineralization has taken place in enamel rods and interrod substance, numerous spots where a higher degree of carious demineralization seems to take place are noted as diffuse demineralized specks. After this stage, the proteolysis of the remaining organic substance in the enamel probably begins to take place in the demineralized specks. Probably as the results of these two activities, carious destruction is initiated in enamel rods and interrod substance.
