Abstract

In the 1970s,planning staffs of Essex County Council established the new principles and methods of designing residential areas. In this paper is to be examined the contents of this design control system. In the first part, we analyze the components and conditions of so-called good design, summarize the five new design principles and then point out the importance of the space filled with sense of place. And in the second part, picking up the South Woodham Ferrers, we study the design principles in detail and analyze the contents and compositions of Design Briefs.
