Abstract
The aim of this paper is to understand the problems for making better use of the street space in the future, through researching well developed cases in Japan: Sidewalk cafes on Peace Boulevard, Hiroshima city, and Tsurumi, Yokohama. Major factors realizing the use of street space are shown as follows: 1) local government's participation in the preparatory period of the projects, 2) Public interest of the project, 3) keeping the space for pedestrians traffic. Through a comparison of the management organizations, we found two types: 1) one with local government management, and 2) one with a local organization management.
