Abstract
This study aims to make clear the process of development and problems of public for historical townscape conservation in historical tourism areas. We have set up three measures of value of historical townscape: the value as cultural assets, as living environments and as tourist attractions, and, in the light of these measures, analyzed public projects for historical townscape conservation in Chikugo-Yoshii, as a case study. The result of the analysis shows that projects in Chikugo-Yoshii have been carried out with emphasis on the value as cultural assets.
