The improvement project by the chain reaction is one of urban renewal methods. It promotes the chain reaction of the small renewal projects by public and private partnership under the comprehensive guideline planning of the district or block level. This paper examines some cases of the improvement project by the chain reaction in densely built-up residential areas in Osaka and considers its chain reaction structure from the viewpoint of the effectiveness and sustainability for the living environmental improvements. We conclude that the improvement project by the chain reaction has two basic element; the self-renewal projects and the inducement systems. The self-renewal project consist of individual, co-operative and joint replacement, and the inducement systems consist of a flexible guideline, model effects, partnership, public participation, incentive systems, public facilities, the land of public housing and so on.
