Abstract
Hideaki Ishikawa (1893-1955) is an urban designer in Japanese Modernization Period and one of the his significant achievements is realization of 'City Plaza' in referring to European it. In this process, he had to re-interpret the idea of 'City Plaza' in comparison with Japanese city plan, culture, character of human activities and so on. This thesis aims to clear that how did he construct the concept of Shinjuku-Koma Theater Plaza; the most famous his work; by means of analyzing his all writings. In conclusion, following 2 ideas is cleared. A) Ishikawa had a vision that the center of human activity would shift to 'City Plaza' and he dealt with 'Shinjuku-Koma Theater Plaza' as the pilot project on the option. B) Ishikawa didn't refer to the form of European 'City Plaza' directly, but tried to re-interpret it in comparison with the site planning and the streets composition of Shinjuku Kabukicho and would realize the 'Japanese City Plaza' as a center district.
