Abstract
In recent years increasing numbers of movable footbridges with various movement systems attached have been built in some European countries as well as in Japan. Most of these footbridges are designed not only to allow pedestrian crossing over the water and to maintain maritime traffic but also to make local landmarks with attractive deign and interesting and sometimes unexpected movement. This paper discusses the unique feature of movable footbridges by looking at their design philosophy. The major findings include: The design process of recent movable footbridges counts the role of local landmark by considering locational aspects while traditional movable bridges do not, and the design approach of recent movable footbridges could be categorized into two groups #1; closed form does not suggest its movement, and #2; closed form suggests its movement.
