Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to discuss design control system for the historic area in the small towns. In order to understand these issues, we then decided to carry out a research projects in the three small towns in the 'Land Hessen', Germany. We found several official documents on the design guideline of the three cities and we conducted interview to the technocrats and architects who are contributing to the conserving historical areas of the small towns. We analyzed following subjects of the three cities; 1) types of design control system, 2) backgrounds of design control system, 3) concrete examples of the renovation projects in these towns. As a result, we understood some critical issues on design control system with current urban-design and, we realized importance of discussions for the conservation projects among the specialists and clients in relation with authenticity of the conservation projects.
