Abstract

Awide range of historical cities in eastern Japan was severely damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11th, 2011. The purpose of this study was to clarify the processes and techniques to maintain and restore historic buildings in a historical city in a time of natural disaster. In this study, first of all, six cases of historical cities restored from the natural disaster in the past were analyzed. Then, based on the analysis, the restoration processes and techniques were explained. After that, five cases of historical cities suffered from the Great East Japan Earthquake were analyzed in order to verify the effectiveness of the processes and techniques. As a result of these analyses, it is possible to say that the useful knowledge concerning restoration of historical cities in a time of natural disaster has been provided.
