Abstract
Recently the importance of urban sustainability is increasing, and many urban sustainability assessment tools have been created. This study aims to reveal similarities and differences of tools, and to bring out common trait of the tools which are widely used. contents and evaluation cases of selected six urban sustainability assessment tools were analyzed. Through the research, tools were classified to three types according to which aspect of cities they can evaluate. It is found that the evaluation indicators differ between tools in many ways according to their types, contexts of the area they were used in, and others, and that tools need strict evaluation processes to maintain their quality especially if they use qualitative evaluation. It is also found that popular tools have become widely used in different ways in the U.S. and in Europe.
