Abstract
As a measure for promoting the compact city, location optimizing plan was designated in Japan. According to the "Handbook on Evaluation of Urban Structure" issued along with that, we can extract the problem of the city by comparing with other cities with the same population size. However, in this research authors wonder that there was another criterion to extract finer tasks. Therefore, as a basic study to find the criteria, authors categorized urban structures using urban structure evaluation index. As a result of cluster analysis, it was possible to categorize the target cities into seven categories. Through the results, it was possible to suggest that not only the size of the population but also the difference in the geographical features and the population distribution of the city as criteria for comparing cities.
