Research about improvement of townscape with new type local housing

Yatsuo-machi, Toyama city, had historic townscape which was very unique and vanishing especially in period of rapid growth. In 1987, Yatsuo-machi established “HOPE plan” to improve it with new type local housing, named “Yatsuo-gata-juutaku”. This research is about the movement which is called “Rehabilitation of townscape”, started from HOPE plan and continues about 30 years. “Yatsuo-gata-juutaku” makes living environment better and also makes townscape ordered. It induces rebuilding or remodeling from old house to Yatsuo-gata-juutaku, and realizes the Rehabilitation. Although such metabolism makes the townscape beautiful, however, it loses historical building or traditional size of lots. I found out the unique feature of this model, that keeps the balance in living environment, beauty of townscape, and historicity. Conservation of historicity is realized by building other than main residence, such as detached room and secondary residence.
