In Islands of Japan, though seriously suffering from depopulation, we can see emerging planning actions including those through urban planning framework, and sharing these experiences is essential to overcome challenges of the islands. However, few researches have focused on islands from urban planning perspective. Thus this research, taking all 409 inhabited islands of Japan, aims to clarify the characteristics of City Planning Areas (CPAs) designated of islands by analyzing designation of City Planning Areas, and land use regulation and urban development projects of these areas. The major findings includes: (1) 78 CPAs are designated in 96 islands, (2) the areas cover 50 percent of land and people of all inhabited islands, and (3) 62 CPAs covering 64 islands are non-Area Devisioned and Land Use Regulations are decided in 43 CPAs covering 42 islands, some intended to preserve historical and cultural environment unique to each island and to maintain and/or improve living environment.
