A needle-type sample preparation device prepared by packing a bundle of polyimide filaments into a specially-designed needle has been developed for the subsequent gas chromatographic (GC) analysis of formaldehyde (FA) in air samples. In this study, FA was derivatized using n-octylamine as the derivatization reagent coated on the surface of polyimide filaments packed in the needle device, and the derivative was determined by a flame ionization detector (FID), which is one of the most popular detectors in GC. Under the optimal condition for the sample preparation, gaseous FA was successfully derivatized and the FID signal intensity was significantly improved. Calibration curve for FA showed a linear relationship in the range of 0.05-0.30 ppmv with a high correlation coefficient (r2 = 0.955). The relative standard deviation for the obtained peak areas within the measured concentration range was 6.0 % or less. The limit of detection and limit of quantification values were 0.003 ppmv and 0.011 ppmv, respectively.
