Abstract
The purpose of this study is to make a contribution to the field of education and practical research on intonation by examining an aspect of the teachability of English tones for Japanese learners. As a result, it was found that the pitch range of the tone of the Japanese learners of English was approximately 4.3 st, and the ratio with which those learners were able to pronounce English in the correct direction of the tone given in the instruction was about 77.8%; thus, it was suggested that the tone is teachable for Japanese English learners. It was also observed that Japanese learners of English were good at pronouncing rise, but were not good at pronouncing fall and fall-rise. With regard to tone functions, Japanese learners of English were quite capable of representing grammatical functions, but not so capable of performing discourse functions.
