Physical education (P.E.) is expected to promote physical activities in daily life outside the class hours as well as during the class, but the actual situation is not clear. The objective of this study is to clarify the actual situation of how the outside-of-the-class physical activities in daily life are promoted by university P.E., through the literature research of foregoing studies and survey research of faculty and students. The literature research was conducted based on reporting guidelines for scoping review. Studies measuring the amount of the outside-of-the-class physical activities under the condition of taking initiatives to promote physical activity in daily life in Japanese university P.E. classes were searched on CiNii Research and J-STAGE, with the keywords of “Physical Activities” OR “Exercise” AND “P.E.” AND “Daily life” AND “University Students”. The survey research was conducted with 13 faculty members in charge of P.E. in liberal art and 284 students taking the course at A University and B University in the Metropolitan area. As a result, the following issues regarding promoting physical activities in daily life through the university P.E. classes became clear. 1) The number of hit research papers was 11, and their scholarly reports were extremely few. 2) Among them, the efforts to promote physical activities in daily life were all based upon “knowledge”, and no efforts were reported to tackle the specific physical activities to promote in daily life based on “practice”. 3) The percentage of faculty members who answered “yes” to the question if there were efforts to promote physical activities in daily life in the university P.E. classes was 69%, whereas that of students was 28%. There is a substantial difference in awareness between students and faculty members. It is desired from now on to deal with educational materials for actual physical activities which directly result in active daily life, and in addition, to accumulate scholarly information on the contents of their actual implementation and results of their learning.
