Abstract

【Introduction】 This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a self-assessment checklist for the forehand long-serve skill in badminton. 【Participants and Methods】 We enrolled 58 students attending the badminton class at universities A and B (men: 32, women: 25, no answer: 1). The participants undertook a forehand long-serve skill test while recording a slow-motion video. The skill test involved hitting five serves over the net. The skill test score was self-assigned by the participants according to flight distance, up to a total of 25 points. After the skill test, the participants watched the slow-motion video and rated themselves on a five-point self-assessment checklist containing three subscales: 1) stance (four questions), 2) time to release the shuttlecock and swing the racket (swing, four questions), 3) position of the shuttlecock and wrist angle when hitting (wrist angle, five questions). 【Results】To investigate the correlation between the skill test score and self-assessment checklist, we determined the Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient (rs). The skill test score correlated positive with subscales stance (rs = 0.43, p < 0.01), swing (rs = 0.37, p < 0.01), wrist angle (rs = 0.44, p < 0.01). 【Conclusions】 The self-assessment checklist introduced in the present study was effective in evaluating the forehand long-serve skill in badminton.
