Study was made on the burning characteristics of gas oil both in the yellow flame combustion and blue flame combustion by means of small spray combustor. The following results were obtained from the study.
1) In the yellow flame combustion, the yield of 'carbon' increased with the decrease of air-fuel ratio. The increase of 'carbon' yield was especially remarkable in the vicinity of stoichiometric air-fuel ratio.
In the blue flame combustion, the yield of 'carbon' increased gradually according to the decrease of air-fuel ratio. The yield of 'carbon' in the blue flame combustion was much lower than that obtained in the yellow flame combustion.
2) In the yellow flame combustion, the yield of 'carbon' increased as the aromatics content of fuel increased, but the effect of mean boiling point on 'carbon' formation was not recognized.
3) When the gas oil was burnt in the state of spray combustion, 'carbon' collected from exhaust gas was soot and there was no cenosphere.
4) In the yellow flame combustion, the length of flame increased with the increase of aromatics content of fuel and the effect of mean boiling point on flame length was not recognized. The maximum temperature of flame increased with the increase of aromatics content and mean boiling point of fuel.
The maximum temperature of flame in the blue flame combustion was higher than that in the yellow flame combustion and the length of flame in the blue flame combustion was shorter than that in the yellow flame combustion.
5) The combustion efficiency was affected neither by combustion mode nor by the properties of fuel.
