Copolymerization of ethylene and propylene with nickel oxide-silica-alumina catalysts to produce low molecular polymers was studied.
From the experimental results obtained, the following conclusions might be drawn.
1) The catalysts showed higher activity for ethylene conversion than for propylene conversion.
2) The yields of pentenes, codimers of ethylene and propylene, were found in the range of 12∼25 wt% (based on the reacted ethylene).
3) The ratio of normal pentenes to isopentenes gave always a high value and it was not influenced by the duration of the reaction time, however, appreciably influenced by such factors as the amount of catalyst, the mole ratio of propylene to ethylene and the Ni content of the catalyst.
4) The skeletal structure of the pentenes seemed to be fixed in the initial stage of copolymerization.
