In order to find out solvents of high selectivity and good miscibility with C5 hydrocarbons for the separation of isoprene and to make the comparison of various solvents, the screening of 75 organic solvents, which were selected taking account of their physical and chemical properties, was carried out.
Using a vapor-liquid equilibrium still, the equilibriums in the system containing isoprene, 2-methyl-2-butene and a solvent were observed at various solvent concentrations.
The practical data on the selectivity, miscibility and stability of a solvent were obtained. Besides the known solvents for the extractive distillation of isoprene, there were some other solvents such as N-nitroso-dimethylamine which had excellent selectivity for isoprene. As a general trend, a solvent of high selectivity was inclined to have poor miscibility with C5 hydrocarbons. Using Margules equation, the observed data were tried to be summarized. The good linearity between logarisms of selectivities and solvent concentrations was established under some restricted conditions. The mixtures which contain C5 hydrocarbons and a solvent were analysed quickly using two units of gas chromatographies.
