Abstract

Pharmaceutical education has entered a stage where the use of AI and big data, as well as an understanding of health economics, are increasingly required, driven by the development of patient-centered clinical pharmacy and evolving societal needs. Medical big data comprise diverse sources such as claims data, electronic health records, and patient registries, and real-world data (RWD) research plays a key role in bridging gaps between pre- and post-marketing information, thereby strengthening the evaluation of drug safety. Representative examples include the detection of cardiovascular risk associated with rosiglitazone and the assessment of high-dose MTX safety using the REAL registry. Pharmacists are expected to bridge clinical practice and research through evidence-based medicine (EBM) and critical appraisal. This article summarizes the lecture “Utilization of Pharmaceutical Education and Medical Big Data,” delivered at Hoshi University on September 2, 2025, during the 2025 Annual Meeting of the Japan Pharmaceutical Library Association.
