1. Anatomical characteristics of the leaves of following ten Carices are described in this and two following papers: Carex lasiolepis FRANCH. C. gifuensis FRANCH., C. nanella OHWI, C. globularis L., C. oxyandra KUDO, C. Vanheurckii MÜLL., C. melanocarpa CHAM., C. quadriflora OHWI, C. mira KÜKENTH., and C. lanceolata BOOTT.
2. These ten species may be divided into four groups according to the structures of their leaves as below. The characters denoted in
a group never occur in the other three groups.
I. Spherical protuberances are distributed in almost all the cells in the upper epidermis
-C. lasiolepis, C. gifuensis, C. nanella and C. globularis.
II. Spine cells are widely distributed in the upper epidermis -C. oxyandra, C. Vanheurckii and C. melanocarpa
III. Neither spine cells, protuberances nor hairy cells are found, except in the margin -C. quadriflora and C. mira
IV. Stomata are distributed widely in the upper and under epidermis -C. lanceolata
3. An analytical key to the four species of the first group as
follows:-
1 {Hairy cells occurring in the upper or under epidermis -2 Hairy cells never occurring in the epidermis -C. globularis
2{Hairy cells occurring in the upper and under epidermis. Stomata found in the upper epidermis near the margin of the leaves -C. lasiolepis Hairy cells occurring in the upper epidermis only. Stomata never found in the upper epidermis -3
3{Upper epidermal cells 20-50μ in length. Hairy cells long (average length about 250μ). Stomata 20μ in length -C. gifuensis Upper epidermal cells 50-100μ in length. Hairy cells short (average length about 100μ). Stomata 35μ in length -C. nanella
