The main purpose of this study was to review relevant literatures regarding the actual situations of sexual risk behaviors and related factors among Chinese adolescents focusing on junior high school students prior to the marked increase of sexual intercourse experiences and clarify the problems of an educational approach in China in order to develop an effective sex education program which promotes behavior modification. The main findings were as follows.
The main results were as follows.
1．The content of the sexual experiences was investigated mostly in the studies in high school students or older age groups. According to the results of limited studies on sexual intercourse experiences among junior high school students, the experience rate of sexual intercourse was 0.6-2.6％.
2．Associated with sexual risk behaviors, behavioral factors and environmental factors were mainly examined. For behavioral factors, those who were more in contact with sexual content in the media, those who had experienced physical contact with the opposite sex, and those who had a smoking or drinking experience tended to show higher rates of sexual experiences. For environmental factors, those who lived in the economically developed area, those who did not live with their parents, and those who went to technical schools tended to indicate higher rates of sexual experiences.
3．There were very few studies on the development and effectiveness of programs to prevent sexual risk behaviors based on life skills formation, and none of the studies had continuity. Credibility of the results in these studies is open to question because not only were the contents in the studies heavily weighted in knowledge and study designs were not appropriate, but also the reliability and validity of the survey sheets were not examined.
From the above results, in promoting further research of sexual risk behavior prevention programs based on life skills formation in China, there is an urgent need to investigate the relationships between the psychosocial variables including life skills and sexual behaviors among adolescents by standardized survey sheets used in the previous studies in European countries, the U.S. and Japan.
