This research examined overall trends in the research on health support for schoolchildren provided by Yogo teachers at the time of a disaster in order to consider current and future issues in the field. A literature review was conducted of publications between 1992-2013 registered in the Online Japan Medical Abstract Society database, using the key terms “children, ” “school health, ” “Yogo teachers, ” “disaster” and “radioactivity”. Twenty original papers that were relevant to the aims of this study were retrieved, organized, and analyzed after an analysis form was created. Research contents were organized and classified into three categories (with some overlap). The three categories comprised 8 research papers with content relating to “Understanding the health of children after a disaster, ” 8 with content relating to “Health support for children provided by Yogo teachers, ” and 8 with content relating to “Effects of radioactive contamination on health.” During a disaster, the school becomes an evacuation area and thus Yogo teachers are expected to fulfill many roles. Additionally, due to concerns over radioactive contamination associated with a nuclear accident, it is crucial that efforts are made to maintain and improve the emotional and physical health of the children affected. Considering the reality of the health support provided by Yogo teachers during the recent radioactive accident, there is no clear experiential knowledge of or any precedent event in Japan. Future issues are to empirically examine the health support provided by Yogo teachers, and to improve schoolchildren's quality of life through avenues such as health management and health consultations.
