Two cases of bilaterally nephrectomized patients were studied hematologically for serum erythropoiesis stimulating factor (ESF), Hct. value, Hgb. content, reticulocyte count and monthly transfused blood volume, before, during and after administration of testosterone 100-400mg/wk for 7 months. The patients were also investigated on serum ESF in renal, hepatic and peripheral vein blood which were drawn selectively before bilateral nephrectomy.
No ESF was detected in renal, hepatic and peripheral vein blood, drawn preoperatively. Serum ESF was neither found postoperatively nor during androgen administration. No remarkable improvement of their anemia was noted clinically on androgen administration.
Four cases of regularly dialyzed patients were studied in similar way as control. The control group did not show any significant change in their state of anemia after androgen administration as in anephric group.
