Glucosephosphate Isomerase Isozymes of the Japanese Quail

Abstract

Quail erythrocyte glucosephosphate isomerase (PGI) was examined by the use of starch-gel electrophoresis. From mating experiments, it was clarified that the PGI electrophoretic patterns were under control of two codominant alleles, PGI^F and PGI^S at an autosomal locus. Frequency of the gene PGI^F which determined the band with faster mobility towards the cathode was 0.12 in the laboratory quail population. All tissues derived from an individual showed same electrophoretic pattern, although differences in PGI activity between tissues were observed.
