The measurements of EXAFS for liquid Te and liquid Te--Se mixtures, and neutron diffraction for liquid Te were carried out to study the static structure of liquid Te in a wide temperature range from near the melting point to a low temperature in the supercooled liquid state. The dynamic structure of liquid Te was also studied by means of quasielastic and inelastic neutron scatterings. It is found that near the melting point, liquid Te has a twofold coordinated chain structure consisting of long and short covalent bonds, and a strong interchain correlation exists between those chains. As the temperature decreases from the melting point, the number of the long bonds is reduced and the local structure changes substantially accompanied by the reduction of the interchain correlation. It is considered that the long bonds and the strong interchain correlation are associated with the metallic nature of liquid Te.
