The flow of a viscous fluid past a sphere in a frictionless circular pipe is investigated by using Faxén’s procedure and the results are applied to the problem of sedimentation. Thus we obtained a formula for the sedimentation velocity V in the form: V⁄V0=1–1.6493(dv⁄M3)1⁄3+0.7968(dv⁄M3), where V0 is the terminal velocity of a particle, dv the volume concentration and M a constant of order unity which depends on the distribution of sedimenting particles. Although our model is rather rough, it gives as good results as those given by other theories.
