The quadrupole coupling constant and asymmetry parameter for 59Co in the bromide, iodide, and perchlorate salt of trans-dichloro bisethylenediamine cobalt (III) have been determined. In the perchlorate salt, two inequivalent sites of 35Cl and 37Cl resonance have also been observed. The application of the Townes and Dailey method to the chlorine data gives the covalent character of about 36% for the Cl–Co bond. The electric field gradient at the cobalt site is calculated from considerations of the valence electrons of the cobalt and of the ionic charges at the ligands. The sign of the field gradient is probably positive. The covalent character of the Co–N bond is estimated to be about 65%.
