Heating of a theta pinch plasma is examined, where the initial plasma density varies with the radius of a discharge chamber. High frequency oscillations of the magnetic field are observed in a region where the electron density is lower. A comparison of experimental results with numerical calculations indicates that the overall heating of the plasma is interpreted in terms of mhd shock heating, in spite of evidence of collective fluctuations.
