Effects of Tunneling on the Properties of Metallic Fine Particles

The conditions for observing quantum size effects in metallic fine particles are discussed in reference to the tunneling of electrons between the particles. The effects of tunneling are shown to be not so large as to destroy the energy level discreteness in particles if they are separated even by very thin layers of an insulator.
