The cubic-rhombohedral transition in NaCl type RbNO3 crystal is theoretically treated as that induced by a coupling between orientation and shear strain. On the basis of a proposed 8-orientation model of NO3− ion, the expression of linear coupling is obtained. The theoretical results are compared with experimental results reported in the preceding paper (J. Phys. Soc. Japan 43 (1977) 1962). The observed transition temperature of the first order transition and the observed temperature dependence of X-ray diffuse scattering in the cubic phase are well explained quantitatively by a value of C2⁄c44, where C is a coupling constant. The estimation of the coupling constant from the interatomic forces also gives a support on the validity of the present treatment.
