Optical Bleaching of V₂ and V₃ Bands in KI Crystals at 19 K

When the KI crystals colored additively or electrolytically are irradiated at 19 K with 270 nm-light, the new bands appear at 404, 575 and 808 nm. These three bands are assigned to I₂⁻ or I₂⁻-like centers. Upon irradiation with polarized 328-nm light at 19 K, the V₂ and V₃ bands at 342 and 289 nm exhibit the ⟨100⟩ anisotropy. Configurations of V₂ (or V₃) centers at low temperatures are discussed from the viewpoint of an I₃⁻ molecular ion in KI crystals.
