A detailed investigation of defect motions has been carried out near the onset of the fluctuating Williams domains (FWD) in the electrohydrodynamic instability using a cell with intermediate aspect ratio. The number of defects in the cell changes nonperiodically in time with the 1⁄f-type power spectrum. The threshold for the onset of the FWD shows a large hysteresis in the present aspect ratio. We conclude that the FWD is the defect chaos with rather low dimensionality.
