The spin polarization of conduction electrons in Gd is clearly observed in the magnetic Compton profile. The magnetic moment of the conduction electron is evaluated to be 0.53±0.08 μB/atom, consistent with the bulk magnetic moment. The measurement is performed with circularly polarized synchrotron-radiation X-rays emitted from an elliptical multipole wiggler. A segmented Ge solid-state detector having thirteen elements is successfully used for high count-rate accumulation.
