Introduction. Calcium is one important component of bone which has a function to prevent the occurrence of bone loss or osteoporosis. One of treatment to prevent osteoporosis is dietary intervention or nutraceutical. One source of calcium is fish, especially in parts of the bone rich in calcium, phosphorus, and carbonate, for example, catfish. This studied aimed to saw the potential of catfish bone wasted as a source of calcium for the prevention of osteoporosis.

Methods. Induction of osteoporosis was done using celecoxib 50 mg/kg BW po every day and dexamethasone dose 7 mg/kg BW intramuscular every week. The study consisted of 6 test groups, normal, control, comparator Ostocal® at a dose of 45 mg/kg BW, and fishbone flour at doses of 22.5, 45, and 90 mg/kg BW. Induction and administration of the dosage are given simultaneously for 30 days and the medication gave 30 minutes after induction. On the 31st day, parameters of osteoporosis were measured, such as bone ratio (femur, tibia, and fibula) bone strength, bone calcium level, serum alkaline phosphatase level and bone histology.

Results. The results showed that all of the group of fishbone flour showed the significant difference result with the control group at P <0,05 with the t-student test. Administration of fish bone flour with dose 22,5 mg/kg BW, 45 mg/kg BW and 90 mg/kg BW in the test group on comparison did not give significant difference (p> 0,05) in bone ratio, bone strength, calcium levels and alkaline phosphatase. All doses can increase in bone ratio varies between 18-30%, increase in calcium levels between 5-16%, and decrease in ALP level between 51-54%, when compared with control. Histologic results showed an increase in bone mass compared with controls.

Conclusion. The catfish bone waste could reduce osteoporosis in animal models induced celecoxib and dexamethasone. It has potential effect as a nutraceutical.
