Dry Powder Coating: A Novel Technique for Film Coating Solid Substrates

Dry powder coating is a relatively new film coating technology in the pharmaceutical sciences. It involves the application of polymeric particles to the surface of solid substrates which are then subsequently cured at elevated temperatures to form a polymeric film. First introduced in the late 1990s, this technology has potential to solve many problems associated with both aqueous and solvent based film coating, including hydrophilic degradation of moisture sensitive drugs, solvent residues, and the migration of drugs into the film coating during processing. Polymers with a low glass transition temperature can be applied directly to the substrate, or alternatively, polymers are pre-plasticized and then cryogenically ground into fine particles before application to the substrate surface. The coalescence of fine particles during the curing step results in an elegant coating without the problems associated with physical aging.
