Processing waste of sea scallops, of which 500-550 thousand tons are cultured annually in Japan, contains highly bio-accumulated cadmium and is a difficult industrial waste to dispose of safely. Though a system combining strong acid soaking and electrolysis has been developed to remove cadmium, the introduction of this type of system to small and medium-sized enterprises is difficult because of the large amount of required capital investment. There are some points to be improved in the system; one of the most complicated being the manual separation of the hepatopancreas before automatic processing. As a part of system development for this purpose, the authors have previously reported fundamental conditions using a weak acid washing method. However, there have been significant difficulties, such as a large amount of waste solution being generated in the process, and the challenge of the manual separation of the hepatopancreas. In this paper, we have described the optimum conditions to considerably decrease the volume of waste fluid, as well as the elimination of the manual separation of the hepatopancreas, by the combination of ordinary techniques and the weak acid washing method already reported.
