Practice of Eduinformatics and Institutional Research (IR) in Society 5.0 Implications for Integrating Practice and Theory in Applied Business Studies

Abstract

During the transition from Society 4.0 to 5.0, Japanese Applied Business Studies faces the challenge of integrating practice and theory. This study proposes Eduinformatics as a mediating concept to explore methods for connecting Institutional Research (IR) with Applied Business Studies. Specifically, three analytical approaches are presented. First, through FS analysis (Feasibility-Sustainability analysis), we evaluated the feasibility and sustainability of IR operations, demonstrating the importance of phased transitions. Second, through the ABDU-M framework (Abduction-Abstract degree-Urgency Matrix), we systematized abductive thinking processes and achieved a balance between practical challenges and theory building by classifying IR activities along two axes: urgency and abstraction degree. Third, through the establishment of IR philosophy, we constructed a foundation for scientifically deriving theory from practice. These findings provide a new methodology of "theorizing data-driven practice" in Applied Business Studies through the data analysis methods and theoretical frameworks offered by Eduinformatics. In the Society 5.0 era, this interdisciplinary approach serves as a foundation for deepening collaboration between higher education institutions and the business world, supporting sustainable development.
