This paper proposed a novel motor structure designed for electric-vehicle applications. The proposed motor aims to achieve both magnet volume reduction and torque ripple suppression, which are critical performance challenges for electric-vehicle motors. Previous research addressed these objectives by proposing an IPM-SynRM configuration, which combines a synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) and an internal permanent magnet (IPM) motor units axially. However, this motor was unsuitable for automotive applications because its magnetic characteristics differ between the rotational and counter rotation directions. The proposed motor resolved this issue using numerical optimization, thereby the dependence on the rotation direction. In this study, the magnetic characteristics of the proposed motor were calculated through numerical analysis and compared with those of a conventional motor. The results demonstrated that high magnetic characteristics can be achieved regardless of the rotation direction while maintaining the advantages of the conventional motor.
