Abstract
Owing to the flat-shaped combustion chamber and the extremely strong one-way mixture flow, the combustion characteristics of Rotary Engine(RE) are quite different from those of ordinary reciprocating gasoline engines. In this paper, detailed RE combustion was observed using a high-speed camera and visualization apparatus such as optical RE and Rapid Compression Machine. As a result, the ignition and the flame propagation of RE-specific combustion was clarified. Furthermore, to achieve faster RE combustion for improving the fuel economy, or reducing CO2 emission, the effect of spark-plug arrangement on flame propagation was observed, that is, the multipoint ignition was examined using the combustion simulation, the visualization apparatus, and the real RE.
