Abstract

Blends of buthanol, ethanol, and diesel fuel were applied in a DI diesel engine with supercharging and cooled EGR. Silent, clean, and efficient combustion was realized over a wide load range when the quantity of pilot injection and the intake oxygen content were optimized. The degree of constant volume heat release and the indicated thermal efficiency with the blend fuels improved over a wide load range as the pilot injection was increased and the heat release with the pilot injection retarded to near TDC. The smokeless operation range can be extended with low pressure injection or low intake oxygen content
