Abstract

An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the possibility of low compression ratio diesel engines by means of Fatty Acid Methyl Esters with high ignition quality, lauric acid methyl ester (LAME). The engine bench results show that the brake thermal efficiency in compression ratio 14 is almost same as that in 18, and in the case of LAME the emission of NOx is reduced because bulky lean combustion occurs due to highly oxygen-containing fuel, and the emission of THC is also reduced because the amount of mixture during the ignition delay time decreases. Furthermore, the increase in the thermal ignition delay of the LAME due to apply low compression ratio and EGR is smaller than that of gas oil, and so the tradeoff between NOx and THC, PM, SOF is improved compared with gas oil.
