Abstract

EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system with EGR cooler is applied to diesel engines to improve their emission levels. EGR coolers have a problem that the deposition of PM in exhaust gas causes deterioration of their heat exchange performance. In this study, exhaust gas from a diesel engine was introduced into a test EGR cooler, and the deposition of PM in it was investigated experimentally. As a result, the mass of EGR deposit increased with a decrease of the excess air ratio. Moreover, the removal characteristics of the deposited PM by passing through blow-off air were examined.
