This paper describes the improvement of diesel combustion by using the fatty acid methyl-ester (FAME) with a high cetane-number. The ignition quality of soybean methyl-ester (SME) was extremely improved by producing hydro-peroxides in a fuel through the oxidation treatment. Engine-bench test results show that by the use of SME with high cetane-number, NOx emission can be reduced by retarding the fuel-injection timing beyond the top dead center without supercharging, while suppressing the increase in ignition delay and unburned emissions.
