The Role of Metaphorical Expression in Ensemble Training

Abstract

This paper describes the effectiveness of metaphorical expression in training orchestra ensemble, string ensemble in particular. We collect metaphorical expression examples and classify them into two groups according to their aims, either to improve rather basic skills or to give musical expression. We also compare metaphorical expressions to analogical reasoning and identify the former as giving expressive principle whereas the latter as giving explanation principle.
